What is photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy?

Photobiomodulation therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy, is used by athletes for the treatment of damaged tissues. The therapy uses lasers to reduce the inflammation, lessen the pain and promote tissue repair. Other than sports injuries, PBM therapy is also used for low back pain, neuropathic pain and arthritis.

The treatment process

In photobiomodulation therapy, the affected area is exposed to the red or near-infrared light beam that should be in non-ionising forms, for example, lasers, LEDs, and broadband light. This allows the light energy or photons to penetrate into the skin tissue to activate the heightened production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the molecular currency of intracellular energy transfer and decrease free radicals or oxidative stress, which triggers most chronic diseases.

Every case is different but at least two to four 15- to 20-minute sessions inside the NovoThor PBM therapy pod have been found effective at treating minor injuries while up to 12 sessions at least once a week is recommended for clients with chronic medical conditions.

Who can benefit from photobiomodulation therapy?

Photobiomodulation therapy is proven effective not only for sports-related injuries, such as plantar fasciitis, hamstring pulls and muscle sprain but for speeding up repair and recovery after rigorous physical training in many professional athletes. Because of its amazing results, PMB has been recognised as a wonder pain management technique in most major league sports franchises and Olympic teams from around the world.

There are many clinical trials that back up the positive effects of photobiomodulation therapy in clients with carpal tunnel syndrome, cardiovascular ailments, pulmonary diseases, cancer, diabetes and neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Photobiomodulation therapy is deemed safe. However, written confirmation may be required for pregnant women or for clients undergoing cancer treatments.
